about

I let this one get my my inner censor, even though it is one of my preachy "god will save us" songs. It's certainly more subtle in that message than the ones that I winced and hoped would never be unearthed if I died and became like Van Gogh or Herman Melville. It is important to note that as a Baha'i, I was raised to think that mankind is special and capable of being a divine and perfected species. The narrative that mankind is fallen and that only Jesus returning will be able to save us is something I have detested and rejected from the start. Baha'is believe that "the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth" is more or less a charter from God, a Covenant we have been given. Salvation is in our own hands, and only by doing the work of social engineering ourselves are we going to be able to save the world and mankind. So all of my life I have believed that creating a better world is not only possible, but it is actually our very purpose and the meaning of life. Religion, especially Christianity, is like making a demo tape and hoping someone will make you a wealthy rock star overnight, without even bothering to mail the tape to anyone or play a gig. As far as salvation goes, the Baha'i faith is very much a DIY road to paradise. I took that, and a lot of other idealistic principals for granted because I wasn't brought up with dogma. If there is one thing I still admire about the Baha'i faith, it is their central principal: resisting dogma, thinking for yourself, giving no authority to anyone. Faith is between you and god, and no one else gets to tell you what your faith should be.
