I had just returned from my mother's funeral when I assembled this livestream contribution to the release party held in my honor. My mother was a midwife, a nurse, and artist and a model. Her view of the world was guided so strongly by human sentiment that I often felt a loss at my own failing to find so much meaning to small, un-noticed things. In this case, while driving me to Austin Community College to register for classes one grey winter's day we passed a small cardboard sign that said "Happy Birthday Hector."
Simply, just offhand, she said "Who is Hector?"
That's all it took. I tried to expand on my mother's impressions on that day, tried to find as much meaning in sentimental gestures as she did and it ended up being such a popular song that people used to request it.
I couldn't play it at the time because I wrote it on an Optigon organ and had never thought to try transposing it for guitar. Now I have. Actually MORE than 30 years later...
My mother's love impressed everyone she met and she lives on to this day in everyone's hearts. She lives in this song, and I'm ok. She died peacefully at the age of 93.
We should all be so lucky.
